How climbing is a fun new activity for students

Stressed out student? Maybe try adding climbing to the mix!

Do students need climbing? F*ckYeah!

Everyone can agree that life as a student can be very stressful, especially in 2022. Today there are more than just the traditional stressors of meeting your parents’ expectations, completing coursework, working a part-time job, and maintaining a social life. You also have to deal with constant notifications and content refreshes from your phone and social media. Climbing is important as a way to unplug from your phone, move your body, and be social while interacting face to face with other humans.

Let's take a closer look at these three areas climbing impacts your life. Firstly, unplugging yourself from your phone lets you live in the moment. By being present in the moment, you are allow yourself to deepen connections with others. Being more present has also proven to reduce stress. Some people may argue that you may use your phone while resting in between climbs, but having chalk on your hands dissuades you from using your phone as often as you would otherwise. And you certainly can’t perform well on the wall if you don’t put your phone down!

When it comes to moving your body, students spend a lot of time sitting in class and while studying. It’s well known that leading a sedentary life is not good for your health. Studies have shown that getting one hour of exercise per day can increase productivity, decrease fatigue, and increase performance. While it may seem difficult to make time for exercise, the tradeoff is that by being more active, you become better able to be productive in other areas of your life! Even though you might be sacrificing an occasional hour of study time, you can be more productive during the hours you do study if you’re in good health. With a limited number of hours in a day, we can’t waste time being inefficient, and getting that movement in actually boosts your productivity. Of course, this is all on top of the fact that physical activity will increase self confidence and improve your overall health.

Lastly, its good to talk to people in person. These days we spend a lot of our time making connections through screens, and it’s very easy to forget the benefits of being surrounded by other people. Student nights at the climbing gym are a great way to meet other like-minded individuals of the same age. It’s a positive environment that encourages everyone to work together, and the overall vibe is fun and free. You don’t feel obligated to think about school, work, or other stresses when the gym is bumping!

This is why we’ve introduce our Student Climbing Nights! Come out to climb at Toprock — every Friday evening, we give students a discounted rate to come play, socialize, and be in the moment.

Happy climbing and see you on the wall! :)
